The Women’s Engineering College, Puducherry (erstwhile Women’s Polytechnic College, Puducherry) bred from its embryo in the year 1988 with one conventional Course of Computer Engineering affiliated to Directorate of Technical Education, Chennai, Tamilnadu. Later, four more Courses namely Electronics and Communication Engineering, Architectural Assistantship, Modern Office Practice and Electrical& Electronics Engineering paved its way into the system.

The institute through its excellence and glorified journey over a period of more than 34 years could attract name, fame and reputation, country wide and as a result the Ministry of Human Resource Development, GoI was kind enough to extend its assistance through “World Bank under Technical Education-II Project” and the Scheme of “Sub- Mission on Polytechnics under Coordinated Action for Skill Development” for the growth of this institute in terms of capacity expansion, modernisation and quality improvement. Implementation of this project assistance by the Government of UT of Puducherry commensurate enormous changes in the institutional infrastructure.

Huge procurement of state of art equipments and machineries, books and establishment of new labs and other infrastructural developments have multiplied the academic resources of the institute and opened the floodgate before the aspirants for nourishing their academic / technical and professional excellence. In addition to the above, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, GoI flourished the entire campus as barrier free environment through the “Scheme for Implementation of Person with Dishabilles Act”. The above milestones resulted into up- gradation as Women’s Engineering College.

The Institute is administered by the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education through Pondicherry Institute of Post Matric Technical Education (PIPMATE) Society, Government of Puducherry and is affiliated to the Puducherry Technological University, Puducherry. With the approval of AICTE, New Delhi the B.Tech degree courses are introduced from the academic year 2022-23. The curricula and entire academic control of these courses would come under Puducherry Technological University, Puducherry. Also the Government of Puducherry approved to upgrade the course Diploma in Modern Office Practice into Bachelor of Commerce in affiliation with Pondicherry University, Puducherry from the academic year 2022-23.
